Fair Trade Coffees and a Chance to Win a Keurig Mini Plus Brewing System

Win a Keurig Mini Plus Brewing System.  This giveaway is now closed. Congrats to the winner, dgsimpson45@

We are coffee people around here: hubby, me, our 15yo. The three of us are the “big” coffee drinkers, but the young ones have no problem taking sips of my mochas. If it’s decaf, I let them.

Now that the weather is getting cooler, I find that I want a cup of joe a little more often. One to start the day while I dig through my stack of books, another in the afternoon, and maybe a third as I head out to a hockey game. The danger with this last point is that there’s a Starbucks right on my way between home and the rink.

One way that I’ve been able to curb that habit has been to fire up the Keurig. We’ve had our brewer for a couple years now and it’s been such a great way to make good coffee at home. It’s much faster than the cone drip system that hubby uses. So, I can make a cup, or rather, the machine can make a cup while I rush around getting my Hockey Mom on. Love that!

Fair Trade Coffees

This month is National Fair Trade Month. For more than a decade, Green Mountain Coffee® has been a leader in the fair trade movement, providing a better cup of coffee to consumers and a better quality of life for coffee farmers. Fair Trade means coffee farmers get a fair price for their beans they grow.  That means they can invest in crops, their communities, and their futures.

While fair trade coffees sometimes cost more than other types, it’s truly for a good cause.

And the Sumantran Reserve K-cups? Very tasty!

The folks at Green Mountain Coffee are offering Good Cheap Eaters additional savings on the Fair Trade products that are already presently on sale. With the promo code  GMCFTC8163, you can get an additional 10% off all Fair Trade Certified products through November 5th on GreenMountainCoffee.com.

Don’t have a brewing system?

Green Mountain Coffee is also giving away a Keurig Mini Plus Brewing System in orange. How cheerful is that?!

This giveaway is now closed. Congrats to the winners: maralepp@, jackierwood83@, stzimmy@

I didn’t grow up eating Thai food. In fact, the first few times I tasted it, I didn’t really like it. However, I am in love with Pad Thai now. Yum! So good! Unfortunately since my baby girl is allergic to peanuts, we don’t enjoy it as a family. But, we still enjoy a multitude of Asian flavors.

I’m not super experienced at making Asian food at home, but I do play with the basic flavors and experiment a little. I absolutely love the noodles and rice that we recently received from Thai Kitchen to try. The rice noodles are prepared in less than ten minutes which makes it so easy to throw together a quick dinner. And the Jasmine rice? Oh, I feel like I’ve been spoiled. After years of eating only brown rice, it tastes absolutely decadent.

Over the years, a number of Thai Kitchen products have made their way into my kitchen. Some of the ways that I’ve used them include both Thai Chicken Pizza and Thai Chicken Wrap. If you haven’t tried those yet, you should. (Just saying.)

If you’re not feeling like cooking from scratch, they have a number of meal kits that are super easy to pull together and taste great!

This week Thai Kitchen is giving three Good Cheap Eaters an assortment of products from their line.

Prizes may not match those pictured.

A Giveaway from Voskos Greek Yogurt (CLOSED)

This giveaway is now closed. Congrats to the winners: Bluecastle99@, saraschroeder@

While I know how to make my own yogurt, I love to have a stash of yogurt cups in the fridge for quick and easy snacks and breakfasts. The kids look at this as a real treat, especially in comparison to the bulk tubs that I usually buy.

Why is it that a single serving is so much fun?

Recently, we were sent an assortment of Voskos Greek Yogurt to try, including: apricot mango, blueberry, fig, honey, peach, strawberry, and vanilla. Seeing as I only go to taste one flavor (honey), I’d say they were a hit! Well, except for the fig.

The fig lingered awhile in the fridge. (I don’t like fresh fig, so I didn’t think I would like fig yogurt.) It went into a smoothie. True story.

Regardless, I’d say that Voskos yogurt passed the FishFam test.

Greek yogurt, higher in protein that traditional yogurt has a thicker texture that somewhat mimics sour cream. Hubs and I have used it as a substitute for sour cream on a number of occasions since it also has fewer calories.

This week two Good Cheap Eaters will each win 5 free product coupons from Voskos Greek Yogurt.

A Giveaway from Real Salt (CLOSED)

Earlier this year, one of the books that I completely devoured was The Kitchen Counter Cooking School by Kat Flinn. I’ve told you about it before. It’s on the top of my “must-reads” list. If you haven’t read it already, add it to your wish-list this year.

Flinn recounts her experience in teaching folks how to become more at home in their kitchens, including teaching her proteges all about cooking techniques, knives, food sourcing, and salt.

Yes, salt!

She takes her pupils through a salt tasting and show them the different nuances that are in different salts. Not every little white shaker bottle is created equal.

After reading the book, my friend Carrie and I chatted online about it here and there. She said that one of her take-aways from the book was to invest in different kinds of salt. I was fascinated.

Salt was on my radar, so when the Real Salt company approached me to try their products, I jumped at the chance.

What the Deal with Real Salt?

My kids and I had discussed the different flavors and aspects of salt, so they, too were eager to see if this salt would taste different. And it does! And we like it a lot. We felt that the food I seasoned with had more flavor and just plain tasted better.

In case you’re wondering what is different about Real Salt, here’s what they have to say for themselves:

Real Salt means – well, real, authentic salt. A quick glance at the ingredients label on most salts might surprise you! Many salts contain anti-caking agents and even dextrose (sugar). Others have been heat processed and stripped of their natural trace minerals. Real Salt brand, on the other hand, is unrefined and full of natural minerals and flavor – the way salt was meant to be savored.

Real Salt’s unique coloring comes from more than 60 trace minerals, which also lend an amazing flavor that has helped Real Salt become the best-selling brand of sea salt in health food stores. Real Salt is best tasting, healthiest sea salt you can find.

Curious to know more? Check out the Real Salt blog. There is a lot of really interesting information there, including a discussion about how the nuclear testing in Nevada impacts the natural resources in the west, including the salt mines.

This week three Good Cheap Eaters will each win a Real Salt Seasoning Gift Pack.

Look at my people! Those are my two biggest boys when they were five and two. Now they are 15 and 12. How did that happen?!

Ten years ago we lived on two acres in the country. It was mostly flat and weedy. But, we carved out a little space to grow a garden. I loved that garden! It was such a therapeutic device for me back when I had three kids five and under. We spent lots of time outside.

We currently rent a home with a manicured, postage-stamp size backyard upkept by a gardener. Someday we’ll get a piece of earth to call our own. And when we do, I’m gonna plant! I might have grandkids by then, but still.

When we have our Someday Garden, I’m going to plant these babies from the Safe Harvest Seed Bank:

Now that we get a regular produce delivery, I know what to do with this huge variety of fruits and vegetables. Yum!

The seeds for each of these varieties are included in the Safe Harvest Seed Bank which is 100% Heirloom  seeds, 100% NON-GMO, contains 20 Seed Varieties, and has a 5+ years Shelf-Life. This seed bank is like a one-stop shop for your backyard garden.

This week three Good Cheap Eaters will each win a Safe Harvest Seed Bank.

This giveaway is closed. Congrats to the winner: kentmm@.

We’re big coffee fans around here. Hubby and I love a hot cup of java in the morning. During hockey season, I was continually loading travel mugs full of decaf to keep us warm while we cheered in the stands.

While there’s a coffee drive-thru on my way to the rink, I knew I couldn’t sustain the cost of that habit. I found that using my Keurig coffee brewer totally sped up the process, making it just as easy and quick to brew a cup at home as it was to drive by the coffee house.

My favorite K-cup so far is the Newman’s Special Blend Extra Bold. Love that dark flavor. I can brew a larger cup without it tasting too watery. (Costco often has it on sale. Or you can use Swagbucks for Amazon money and get it that way, too.) I also have a reusable filter for my brewer, so I can also fill it with whatever coffee we have on hand.

You can also order via Green Mountain Coffee. If you do, use the coupon code: CELEBRATE8163 to get 15% off storewide. The code will be valid starting December 7th through December 31st, and cannot be combined with any other keycode discount.

There’s no doubt that K-cups are convenient for quick brewing. But, managing to store all those itty-bitty cups? If you’ve got a stash, that can be a rather unwieldy cupboard to open. Avalanche!

Keurig has developed several storage devices to keep K-cups handy. This K-Cup® Pack Countertop Storage Drawer would make a great gift for your kitchen or for a loved one this winter. And I have one for you to win this week!

One Good Cheap Eater will win a K-Cup® Pack Countertop Storage Drawer compliments of Green Mountain Coffee.

This giveaway is now closed. Congrats to the winner: k.albright@.

See this? This box of lusciousness just screams Christmas morning to me. Every year for as long as I can remember, my dad opens a box of See’s candy on Christmas morning.

And, he makes sure that no matter where I am on Christmas morning, that I have access to a box of See’s as well. It’s definitely a taste of home for me and mine.

A few weeks ago one of the boys and I headed to our local See’s candy to get gift boxes for a dinner I hosted. He was thrilled to be able to sample a few new flavors while we were there. We oohed and aahed over many things. It was divine.

However, Little Miss FishChick4 has a nut allergy. The doctor isn’t convinced that it is as severe as we’ve believed. But, until further I’m trying to be mindful of what she eats, so a box of Nuts and Chews probably isn’t for her. This summer I found out that See’s has a wide array of nut-free and other allergen-free candy.

Yeah!

See’s is currently running a sweepstakes thru 12/24. You can win prizes each day & a chance to win the Grand Prize – 1lb of chocolate a month for 30 years! Details here.

This week one Good Cheap Eater will win a $25 gift certificate to See’s Candy.

Cherries Jubilee

Make this easy, flaming dessert: Cherries Jubilee for your next holiday get-together or special occasion. Congrats to the winner of the giveaway: linseyclair@

I am a creature of habit. Or I suppose another way to look at it is that I embrace tradition. Especially when it comes to food.

My family was like that when I was growing up. Certain dishes were always served at the holidays. When we had guests, Mom did it up big, including this amazing flaming dessert called Cherries Jubilee.

It was always so much fun to watch her pour a hot, sweet cherry mixture into her silver chafing dish and then set it on fire!

You know we kids loved that one. The brandy fumes burned off and what was left was this rich warm topping to serve with vanilla ice cream. If Mom was really on her game, she scooped the ice cream before hand so that each glass dish was nice and frosty.

You rock, Mom.

Recently, Eagle Brand invited me to try one of their recipes and pair it with a family favorite. As I looked through their list, my eyes lit on the Vanilla Ice Cream. I didn’t know you could make ice cream with sweetened, condensed milk!

And then my thoughts went to Mom’s Cherries Jubilee. Perfect! What a great pairing to assemble. I hadn’t had the dish in years, not since we started our own family, and therefore, our own family traditions.

So, I splurged on very expensive canned Bing cherries and texted my mom incessantly until she sent me a photo of her stained yellow cookbook, circa 1971. The kids were uber-impressed by my mad pyrotechnic skills. Once I figured out how to use the long lighter hubby bought me just for the occasion.

This is the version that I deciphered from her blurry iPhone pic. This is a pretty easy and straightforward recipe. But, the flaming death part of it gives you the wow factor to impress folks, especially on Christmas or New Year’s.

I’m going to play with the flavors a little next time. I’ve got some ideas, so be prepared for Cherries Jubilee II. I might have found a new old tradition.

You don’t have to do the flaming brandy part of the show, but it will make you a rockstar mom in your kids’ eyes.

Win a prize pack from Eagle Brand.

This week, Eagle Brand is offering one Good Cheap Eater a sweet prize. Literally.

Here’s what you could win:

  • Eagle Brand Sweetened Condensed Milk – Regular, Low Fat and Fat Free varieties
  • $100 Gift Card to Wal-Mart
  • Bakers Box Packaging Set – perfect for boxing up your new treats!
  • Spice Measuring Spoons
  • Baking Scale

Eagle Brand® has been an essential part of many families’ favorite holiday baking traditions, whether preparing fudge, pies, cookies or cakes. Make one of their recipes part of your family’s traditions.

This giveaway is now closed. Congrats to the winner: mnhilburn@.

Long, long ago, in a state far, far away, my friend Amy agreed to do some recipe testing for my cookbook. I was so blessed to have her on my team.

I also laughed a lot about how different our cupboards must look. She, a Kansas native, had to hunt hither and yon for certain ingredients that are simply commonplace in my California grocery stores. Amy cheerfully bought everything on the list and then said,

“Now what do I do with this bottle of cooking sherry? I only needed a tablespoon for that recipe.”

I think she might even have asked the same question about the rice vinegar I asked her to buy.

Well, as it turns out there are quite a few uses for those bottles of sherry and rice vinegar in the final edition of my cookbook, Not Your Mother’s Make-Ahead and Freeze Cookbook. In fact, those ingredients are staples in my pantry — and used often in the book.

I almost always have those in stock because I cook with both quite frequently. Since they are affordable, easy-to-find brands, I typically buy both Nakano and Holland House brands.*

In my book, you’ll find great uses for these items in:

  • Garlicky Italian Chicken Breasts
  • Herb Butter Chicken Tenders
  • Teriyaki Chicken Skewers
  • Chicken Divan with Cheddar Crust
  • Sesame Chicken with Snow Peas and Mushrooms
  • Turkey Burgers with Scallions
  • Gingery Pork and Mushroom Lettuce Wraps
  • Hoisin-Glazed Salmon Fillets
  • Soy-Ginger Pork Tenderloin
  • Asian Slaw

View more videos at: http://nbcsandiego.com.

The Garlicky Italian Chicken Breasts even made an appearance on TV!

simple squares bar

While I was doing my Whole 30, as they say, I read a lot of food labels. I was stunned at how much soy and sugar are in so very many things that we eat. Previously, I thought I was aware of it, but since I was watching every single thing that I ate, I realized a lot had slipped by me.

I found a few processed snacks that passed the test, but basically I was on my own in terms of making food that fit my diet. That meant I clocked a lot of hours in the kitchen. While I love to cook, I confess that I love having something quick and portable on hand.

So, when Simple Squares contacted me, I was thrilled to try out their product. Check out the ingredients list:

Discover Canning & Beautiful Blue Ball Jars (A Giveaway)

$

I confess. I have completely embraced the canning jar craze. My go-to drinking glass is a mason jar, preferably wide-mouth, but since I received a set of these blue Ball jars to review, I’m warming to the standard mouth variety.

Especially since they’re so stinking cool.

I loved them so much, I went ahead and ordered a dozen more on Amazon. These limited-edition Heritage Collection Pint Jars commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Ball brothers’ Perfect Mason Jar. When they’re gone, they’re gone. So, if you think you want some, get them now.

Lynn found them at Target. My Target doesn’t have them. Check yours.

Canning and me go way back.

To my credit, I’ve have a collection of canning jars for about fifteen years.  When we lived in the country out on two acres of weeds and fruit trees, I taught myself to can. Though my Gramma John and many aunts and cousins all put up food every year, my mom never did, so I never learned. Until I was 26 or 27 and I taught myself to make jam. I made olallieberry jam every year until we moved.

I thought for sure I’d have plentiful opportunities to can while living in Kansas City. But, no. We lived in the ‘burbs. And in five years I never found a good and cheap source of produce.

Once we moved back to California, I started canning again. I think this is funny, actually, since one would think that the midwest would be a bigger market than the west coast for such a thing. Anywho, I’ve made batches and batches of homemade jam since coming home.

pomegranate canning equipment

One year it was strawberry, plum and nectarine jams. The next year it was Pomegranate Jelly. So, so good!

Last year I went whole hog. Whole hog, I tell you. I was a canning fiend last year. I made batches upon batches of aprium jam, cherry jam, plum jam, apple butter, and dill pickles.

On Mother’s Day, I cracked open the last jar of aprium jam. Love it. It’s like sunshine in a jar.

This week, we got ten pounds of apriums and I know what we’re going to do with them! In fact, you can guess what the better portion of my day is going to entail. The apriums (a cross between an apricot and a plum) arrived badly bruised so we need to use them up quickly before they spoil. It’s made me nervous since the day they arrived. My plan is to try them in juice, but also to make lots and lots of jam.

Ferb, I know what we’re going to do today.

Not only do I have my handy blue jars, but I also have two editions of the Ball Blue Book Guide to Preserving, preservation guides that show you all the steps of canning. I love their step by step instructions and illustrations. It is a great refresher when I’m a little out of practice.

I bought one copy years ago; I learned to can from that book. The other copy I bought last year. Both work well. The newer version has some updated recipes and a different format for measuring pectin. The older has tried and true recipes that I love.

ball giveaway package

Along with the jars, Ball also sent me the Ball Home Canning Discovery Kit. I have two canners in different sizes as well as the racks that go with them. What I like about the discovery kit is that it transforms any pot into a canner. It looks perfect for making small batches of jam. It will also store a little more easily and compactly than my traditional canners.

Win a set of blue jars and a Ball Home Canning Discovery Kit.

I have really loved the pleasure of opening home canned foods. Not only is it simply satisfying from a self-sufficiency stand point, but it also is so tasty! I’m excited that I can share the love with you.

One Good Cheap Eats reader will receive a set of Heritage Collection Pint Jars as well as a Ball Home Canning Discovery Kit.

Enter to win never fried French Fries from Crav-On.

cravontruckTour

Back in May I got to try a great new product from Crav-On. I was at Camp Blogaway, a food bloggers’ conference. Crav-On was one of the sponsors. They drove their food truck up a mountain to feed hungry food bloggers. I loved the concept from the beginning.

First, food trucks are now cool and hip. So, what a great way to get the word out about their new product. Second, these frozen French fries are never fried. Potatoes are blanched, tossed with olive oil, salt, and pepper, and flash frozen. They are great served with a number of toppings, which is exactly how they served them to us at the conference. A whole array of toppings were spread out and you could build your own creation.

I knew instantly how I could serve these fries at home. Well, beside the standard “serve them as fries” option.

My family loved the fries that I served them from Crav-On. Since hubs and I are trying to watch what we eat — and feed our kids — he was particularly pleased when I told him about the ingredients list: potatoes, olive oil, sea salt, annatto, and caramel color.

Find Crav-On Fries at a store near you. You can get a coupon via their Facebook page.

This week four Good Cheap Eaters will win an oven mitt, a cookie sheet, and a product coupon from Crav-On.

Introducing Supermarket Superstar & a Giveaway

The following content is sponsored by Lifetime and A&E Television Networks.

In the summer of 2010, I wrote a book proposal for a cookbook idea I’d been simmering for the previous year. I remember walking through Barnes and Noble with my husband one night, drifting toward the food section. I sat amongst the cookbooks and half cried, half prayed that my name would someday be on those shelves.

I was lucky/blessed enough to secure an agent in the fall, and within two weeks the book idea sold to a publisher. You could have knocked me over with a feather.

Last fall I had the opportunity to see my first cookbook on those very same B&N shelves. Wow. That was kind of unreal to see a long-kept dream come to fruition.

This next year has me working feverishly on more than one NEW cookbook, so I guess it wasn’t just a flash in the pan. Hit me with a frying pan and call me a cookbook author.

How did I get here?

I can understand the anxiety and excitement involved in getting your idea out of your head and into the marketplace. It’s no easy feat.

So, I find it fascinating to consider the new TV program that starts tonight on Lifetime.

Introducing Supermarket Superstar

I’m not a huge TV watcher, but when I do it’s food reality shows. Just call me the Most Interesting Woman in the World. ;)

Seriously, I love watching food TV. So, I’m really curious about the new show starting tonight.

supermarket superstar

Premiering Monday, July 22, at 10 ET/PT and hosted by Stacy Keibler, “Supermarket Superstar” gives undiscovered food entrepreneurs their chance to shine among the big brands in the highly competitive food industry. Almost anyone can cook a great meal, but this is the first food competition show that provides a platform for individuals that can change the way millions of Americans shop and eat.

The premise of the show is to feature folks who have a packaged food idea that they want to bring to market. Seeing as there’s a lot of junk on the market, I’d love to see product concepts that feature few ingredients, real foods, and honest labeling. Here’s hoping there are folks out there with these great ideas.

Enjoy Some Goodies (A Giveaway)

Enjoy a box of Goodies, shipped right to your door. Enter to win today’s giveaway, sponsored by Goodies, Co.

goodies at the beach

As you know, I’m a big fan of DIY. I know that if I make something myself, I have a lot of control. I control the ingredients and I can somewhat control the cost.

But, DIY takes time and organization, something that I have in limited quantities.

So, when it comes time to pack everyone up for the beach, I really don’t want to spend too much time getting snacks ready. I’d rather grab some packaged snacks. When we head to an amusement park, the kids cram their waist packs full of treats and snacks. It makes the trip extra fun and special.

Recently, Goodies, Co. contacted me to try out their August Kids Box. The box came packed with a ton of individually sized snacks that any kids would love.

Many of the products had a healthier bent, such as made gluten-free or without high fructose corn syrup. My kids thoroughly enjoyed them. The Goodies Co. offers several different boxes: a taster’s box geared toward adults and a kids’ box designed specifically for the younger set.

Enjoy some Goodies.

Here are some of the benefits I can see in the Goodies subscription Kids Box:

  • try before you buy (a lot) concept
  • discover new snacks (food and beverages) for kids 5-8 years old for $7/month
  • get out of a snack rut
  • find it right on your doorstep with convenient shipping
  • surprise your child – “What snack will arrive this month?”

For $7/month, you’ll receive 5-8 curated snacks – both food and beverage – for your 5-8 year old kid to enjoy. But, like I said, I think older kids will enjoy the box, too. Mine did.

Introducing the New FoodSaver G3H Vacuum Sealer (Giveaway CLOSED)

The following content is sponsored by FoodSaver The giveaway is now closed. Congrats to the winner: the3diggs@

food saver zipper bag accessory

As you know by now, my life has been colored by freezer cooking for over 16 years now. I was very pregnant with our first child when I read the grandmother of all freezer cooking books and set out to fill my freezer. It became an addiction of sorts, this bulk cooking thing. Not only did I have a variety of meals to choose from, but I could also relax a bit at suppertime, knowing that most of the work was done for me.

Over the years, I’ve used a variety of freezer packaging, mostly ziptop freezer bags, aluminum foil, plastic containers with lids, and glass baking dishes with or without nice lids. I’d never had any experience with a food vacuum sealer, but I’d eyed them at Cabela’s years ago. Earlier this summer, FoodSaver contacted me to see if I’d be interested in reviewing the new FoodSaver G3H Vacuum Sealer.

I’ve always been skeptical of these vacuum sealing machines. I’d heard complaints about liquids getting in the seal and plastic overuse. I wasn’t convinced that it would be that useful.

Until now.

Consider the conversation I had with a friend yesterday:

Friend: You’ve never tried the FoodSaver before? My husband bought me one many years ago, but I don’t use it very often. I love it, but it’s hard to do liquids.Me: Well, this one has a drip tray to catch any juices that seem through.

Friend: Oh, mine doesn’t have that.

Me: Yeah, and there are these bags with a liquid barrier cloth, like what they put at the bottom of a package of meat at the store. It catches the juices before they get to the seal.

Friend: Oh, they didn’t have that when I got it.

Me: I really like the ziptop bags. I can put food in them, suck the air out with the machine, and then open the bag and continue using it for food storage if I haven’t used up all the food inside.

Friend: Oh, that must be new.

Clearly, FoodSaver has been listening to folks’ wants and desires and has worked to upgrade the product over the years since my friend first got her machine. Any objections she might have had with her older model are pretty much put to rest by this new baby.

food saver techies

I’ll admit, I was a little intimidated by the package when it first arrived. Thanks to my resident techies, hubs and FishBoy12, it was up and running in no time, even though I was up to my arms in freezer cooking the day we took it out of the box. The three of us had a great time exploring the different packaging and which foods would work best with what wrappers.

Here’s just a bit of what I did this week with the latest model FoodSaver:

I’m most pleasantly surprised with the G3H Vacuum Sealer. The literature that came with it goes into great detail about the best ways to package things and how to watch out for food safety. I really appreciate that.

Honestly? I love this machine. Not only does it seal the food airtight to help prevent freezer burn, it packs food more tightly than I could so that I save space in the freezer.

food saver turkey meat

Obviously, I’m using this machine for freezer cooking, but it can also be used to help store food longer in the refrigerator. I really like this since we try to use ingredients with few preservatives. If I can package it well for refrigeration, like that turkey breast, it will last longer. It’s a nitrate-free roasted turkey breast that is a great price at Costco, but I’ve often tossed the ends of it because it just loses its fresh color and smell.

The FoodSaver literature explains also how you can save money by not wasting food. While I haven’t tested it myself, I can totally see this.

A Giveaway Talenti Pops

You know that Talenti Gelato that we all know and love? The one that I stocked up and bought nine pints when it was on sale at Ralphs recently? Well, it’s now being put into an ice cream pop.

Think Sidewalk Sundae taken to a whole. new. level. The inside is gelato in flavors like Caribbean Coconut, Sea Salt Caramel, Black Raspberry, Coffee, Mediterranean Mint, Double Dark Chocolate, Tahitian Vanilla Bean, and Banana Swirl. The outside is super rich dark chocolate.

This is not a dessert for the weak of heart!

You know, I’ve been cutting down sugar, and while I did eat a whole pop, half probably would have sufficed. They’re that rich and good. My tasters agree.

Klondike Rose potatoes

I {big puffy heart} potatoes. They’re filling and economical. Most importantly, they’re comforting. If it’s a cold or sad day, a hot potato dish is always a comfort.

Potatoes are one of my favorite cheap eats. I could make a meal just out of potatoes and salad. In fact on our last date night I did just that: ordered a caesar salad and a side of mashed potatoes. Here are some of the ways that we enjoy them around here:

Scalloped Potatoes

Scalloped Potatoes

Curried Potatoes

Curried Potatoes

Deli Potato salad

Deli Potato Salad

Potatoes are versatile, allowing you to mix and match them in different ways: baked, roasted, fried, boiled, scalloped, and salad-ed.

Klondike Rose Potatoes

Recently, the folks at Klondike Brands sent me a bag of their Klondike Rose potatoes to try out. They were out of this world! Smooth and buttery on the inside with a red skin to give color on the outside. We had them as Smashed Potatoes one night and then blended the leftovers into Potato Leek soup the next day. So good!

Their potatoes are all GMO-free which is something I particularly appreciate.

Did you know this about potatoes?

  • Store potatoes in a cool dry place, like the pantry. Do not put them in the fridge as refrigeration will make the starch turn to sugar, changing their color and taste.
  • You can freeze potatoes.
  • The greenish tinge on some potatoes is due to light exposure. It can be a build up of chlorophyll or of solanine, a mild toxin. It is best to avoid eating any green parts as they can be toxic.
